Welcome to the third metro radio survey wrap up for 2016 and it was another interesting survey around the country. In Sydney KIIS 106.5 remained the number 1 FM station despite taking a dive of 1.3 share points to 8.1. Smooth FM was closely behind in second place at 7.7 share points and Nova a close third at 7 share points. Overall the winner as it has been for a number of years now is the powerhouse 2GB at 11.8 share points.
Across the sessions 2GB’s Alan Jones dropped 1.1 share points to 14.2 however still led by a country mile with his nearest commercial competitor being KIIS’s Kyle and Jackie O at 9.9 after dropping 1.4 share points themselves. They must have all gone to Smooth and Nova as both stations made gains of 1.3 and 1.1 respectively in breakfast. In Drive, the leader in Sydney was KIIS at 10.1 share points followed by Nova at 8.7 and finally 2Day FM saw an increase of 1.2 share points to 7.8 taking them to third place which sees them start to turn themselves around. On weekends 2GB and Smooth were equal winners with a 9.0 share. With regards to cumulative audience, KIIS is still the clear leader with 940,000 people tuning in each week followed by Nova with 917,000.
In Adelaide Nova 91.9 took the top spot with a 12.0 share followed by Mix 102.3 at 11.8. Breakfast was dominated by FiveAA who gained 2.3 share points to 13.3 and had substantial gains across all dayparts.
Melbourne was once again dominated by 3AW with a 16.0 share who’s nearest commercial competitor was Fox FM with a 9.0 share, a gain of 0.7 on last survey. Both Gold and KIIS saw 0.9 drop in share taking them to 8.1 and 5.7 respectively. 3AW’s breakfast was huge at 21.4 share points and it grew in each daypart as well as leading the market in each session. In Drive, Hamish and Andy on Fox was the nearest competitor to 3AW with an 11.7 share, leading the FM pack in this session.
Brisbane saw 97.3 lead the market again with a share of 14.3 points. Its nearest competitor Nova at 12.1 followed by Hit 105 at 10.7. Breakfast was fairly steady with 97.3 making a half point gain to 14.0 and leading Nova with 11.3 share points. Cumulative audience was very close as 97.3 has 545,000 listeners and Nova 106.9 has 532,000 listeners.
The Perth market stayed fairly flat this survey with the most movement being a 2.8 share point increase of 18-24 year olds for Hit 92.9 but that’s probably getting a bit granular. Overall Mix 94.5 led the survey in share with 14.4 points followed by Nova 93.7 at 13.2. In breakfast Mix 94.5 won this daypart after a 1.0 share point gain after a tie last survey with Nova.
The Nova network is Australia’s number 1 network in share (8.7%) and cumulative audience with 3,194,000 listeners
